Nice lyric...what song?

Spassky himself said that he thought that Fischer would have defeated Karpov in 1975, but that Karpov would have probably won the next Match. Fischer had not played any competitive Chess for 3 years, and one reason for his demands (of which only one was refused) was that he wanted lots of games in the Championship so that he could play himself into form.

One must remember how badly Spassky was treated by the Soviet authorities after his loss to Fischer; this must have affected his Chess ability and concentration. Fischer refused to play for a relatively minor reason. It appears to me that he had already lost much of the desire to continue Chess as World Champion.

There was an interesting three-way telephone conversation, prior to the Fischer-Petrosian match, which included Yugoslav Svetozar Gligorich as the middleman.  There is a stenographic recording in existence.

Gligorich (G) to Fischer (F): Where would you loke to play the match?

F: Argentine has offered the biggest prize, and besides, it's a country fairly near to the United States where I live ...

Petrosian (P): Tell him I won't go to Buenos Aires.  Why should I travel to meet him in his hemisphere.  He's a young man and has already played two matches in America...

G: Fischer says the finacial terms in Argentina are the best.

P:I understand that, and I am not against good terms either.  But there are other considerations too.

G: Tell us, Bobby, perhaps there is some other place.

F: Buenos Aries is the best place.  It is a beautiful city and the steaks there are excellent.

P: What are most important for me are the climate and the general conditions.

F: The money is not so important for him because the State supports him.

P: Fischer has a State too.  Let it support him. I am not such a young person and it is important for me where to play, not only for financial reasons.

F: Argentina's  case is backed up by the biggest offer and experience.  I believe FIDE will rule in Argentina's favor.

P: FIDE has no right to force me.  If it tries to do that, Fischer will be playing someone else - not me!

From Plisetsky and Voronkov, pg 275

Okay, so Fischer has been criticized as a "prima donna".  Who was the prima donna here?

The Soviets absolutely gutted Taimanov

No, Sounds of Silence was an middle 1960s album. The Boxer was on Bridge Over Troubled Water from the 1970s. I don't think Simon and Garfunkel remained a duo much longer after that album.

In 1971, Petrosian was 42 and Fischer was 28.  Spassky was 34.  Korchnoi was 40.

And Arthur Dake was 61.... but no one cared.

Arthur Dake was up in Oregon, issuing drivers licenses.  Steady job - got him through the Depression.

Aw yeah, Reb! Reminds of that blockbuster film, The Graduate! And come to think of it, Paul Simon is about the same size as Dustin Hoffman.

I'm not so much a fan of Simon and Garfunkel, but I'm a huge Paul Simon fan.

Probably not in 1971 though. He's one of those people no one ever talks about though in the 1930s, during the Depression and one of the most marvelous times in US chess, he was a terror.

That's probably why there are so few of us... size is relative.

batgirl

anyway.... back to Fischer, Soviet collusion and each our own inviolable opinons.
