Fabiano Caruana! The Historic Candidate from the US!

I know the championships split, but there is a whole line of world champs you omit to mention, eg Ruslan. Now I know their claims to being a World Champion are laughable, but there is official and then there is not official and officially Karpov was a champ and hence Gata was a candidate.

I have my doubts that even having an American World Chess Champion will even be picked up by the large medium. But it would be nice

I hope that people will share this piece of news on social media and that will, hopefully, put chess on notice again. One can only hope. happy.png

The World Championship match is going to be very exciting. Fabiano is actually one of the very few GM's that has actually mated Magnus Carlson , and has out played him on different occasions! However, Magnus is not one to underestimate.

pdela's attempt of trolling has been totally ignored. Sad.

Sorry, but nope. That FIDE was claiming that they were staging World Champ matches was a joke. FIDE was a joke back then and I hope one day they will recognize their mistake. Most players recognize the following line of succession: Karpov (75-85), Kasparov (85-2000), Kramnik, Anand, Carlsen. It's hard to take other claims seriously, sorry.

Agreed. I think Carlsen is definitely the favorite, but NOT by much. Their rating difference at this point is not huge. Besides the pressure is definitely on the Champion. He has to defend and prove that he is the best.

Sure I understand your desire to disregard some 'official' history, but then again there;s official and there's not official. Anyway done discussing this, feel free to believe what you want, who would I be to tell you what you consider 'real' and what you don't.

Fabi is good underdog bet in a short match.

Buddy, it's not about our dispute. Most serious, professional players don't recognize Karpov as the World Champion in the 90s. Ask any Grandmaster who was the World Champion in the 90s and they'll tell answer Kasparov. And Kramnik after that. They will mention that FIDE had this thing... But in REALITY, Kasparov was the King and FIDE was the joke. happy.png

Fabiano is a real fighter and he has won several very good games against Carlsen. Of course Carlsen has also won some very nice games against Caruana, so I think we are in for a great battle. If I were a betting man, my money would be on the world champion, but Fabi certainly has a chance!

Well written, I agree with you 100% on that. I might add that Carlsen, as a defending champion, and as a perceived favorite, is at some psychological disadvantage. And that may increase Caruana's chances somewhat.

Wow.  I didn't know that!  Can you post a game where Caruana had such a mating threat against Magnus?  Was it a classical game?

Found a nice cartoon depicting the American players. happy.png

Wadalupe. I don't like his style very much. It owes too much to F. Ibáñez and Escobar.
