Well, as long as one is allowed to play in the tournament there shouldn't be something wrong with doing so. Especially having in mind that everyone who considers it to be an overwhelming strategy is allowed to go for it - it's practically not overpowered in any way. Some enjoy grinding rating, some enjoy grinding tournament wins, some play for improvement, some play for fun, etc, etc - there's enough for everyone.

I really think you would be better off trying to see how you can improve your own game rather than being so concerned with who is or is not cheating. Yes we all know that there will always be cheaters here, and yes sangbagging is cheating but the % of cheating i would guess is quite small, most people would be very bored to go through the trouble of losing a bunch of games just to win a cyber-trophy. I think one thing here which determines who does better in the tournaments is if your playing strength happens to fall towards the upper range of the tournament range you play in. For instance if your rating varies between 1200-1299 you are going to have a hard time in a tournament which goes from 1200-1499. On the other hand if your rating is usually between 1400-1499 you would have a good chance in every tournament you enter.Of course we all have good days and bad days. I don't think anyone here thinks there are no cheaters here but its a waste of time to be preoccupied with them.
Hey Richard, I am always trying to improve my game and am not overly concerned about who is or is not cheating.
I found this to be an interesting topic and judging by my response, so do many others.
If you actually read the thread you would have seen that many people think there are no cheaters/sandbaggers and that I am just a sore loser etc.
Finally, I am not preoccupied with them as you suggested. Not sure how you came to that conclusion.
My main goal with this thread was to open up discussion on this subject and to bring awareness to it.
It boggles my mind how so many people on this site ( including you ) seem to be offended by me merely pointing out that Faking a Low Rating to Win is a reality.
Slimcheffy, you probably want to check the games of this member chess.com/members/view/halmazrui He's one of the biggest sandbaggers you can come across. I have reported him though.
Hey VibrantMoves , how do you go about reporting a sandbagger ? I looked around the site a bit and didn't see an obvious way to do it. ALso do the Admins actually do anything about it ? The most blatant one I have encountered recently is " MadKing9-0 " ... someone should report this person.

On next page, click on Contact Us at the top right and fill in the form with your details, link to the sandbagger's account and to his games archive for the games you think he is sandbagging. I'm still waiting for staff to ban that guy's account for cheating as sandbagging is considered cheating if the games are RATED.

Just read this thread. Not sure why, but for some reason you just don't seem to get it. You're not being slammed for saying that sandbagging exists. Everyone knows it does. You're being slammed for accusing specific users of doing it when you have no proof. Even still, if you do have concerns about a particular player you should contact the site admins about it. Naming and shaming other users in the forums is just tactless and generally gets you scorn (and rightfully so).
Sandbaggging does exist. And it does here. Problem is if they do it somebody benefits from them throwing a game away. So hard really get a lock on them as they can cry they lost focus or having a few bad days. Even they can claim they were trying something new(strategy).

Goa...l just make sure and the end of day you win more than your share of the games and stop looking so hard at what the other playing is doing and focus on your game. Else you will get so upset a lose a couple of games because are angry about a situation that you have little control to change it.

No, I read the thread. You don't actually have proof, as it's impossible for you to know exactly what they are doing or thinking. Accusations are not proof. Suspicion is not proof. Again, if you have concerns with a particular player then contact the site admins. All you're accomplishing in this thread is making yourself look like a petty, sore loser.

I have accomplished much more in this thread than what you suggest. I have engaged many people and opened up some great discussion surrounding the topic of Faking a Low rating to win. This brings awareness to a very real but sad trend. Unfortunately with the good comments also come the trolls, people like Tigerprowl9 and yourself who just resort to insults when challenged.
Again I will point out, if you did read the thread you would have seen the proof, beyond reasonable doubt, that some people are sandbagging. Accept it, and may the force be with you.
Nowhere have I insulted you. I have noticed, however, in this thread that you seem to have quite a belligerent streak yourself. Not surprising really. That seems to be a trend with people who throw around accusations of cheating.

my only comment Rich would be to reverse your 2 reasons. Enjoyment first, money second ( although I don't understand how someone would make money sandbagging on Chess.com ) . I think on this site they do it mainly for enjoyment... to mess with people.
