Hmm....I guess it's true that there's not much chat here, just the forums. I don't like to chitchat during games, just want to concentrate on the game.
Maybe the site can do something more in that area.

Shoot me a friend request if you want. I'll play UNRATED games with you for practice. I'm not the best, but I know some stuff.

Hi Irascible Cur it is indeed a fact that little chat is evident across the boards. I did indeed ask one of my opponents if he was a Computer but was advised that he was actually a Trappist Monk.

I knew he was a stranger to the truth when he lost his queen because of what he claimed was his annoying wife and wanted a rematch !

Doodlerbug, In an effort to be helpful, I looked at your last couple of games and there are some basic fundamentals you want to keep in mind. Bring your knights and bishops into the game as quickly as you can. In chess parlance, this is called "development." The reason is, the more troops you have out there working for you, the stronger your position becomes both offensively and defensively. So, develop your pieces (knights and bishops) toward the center because the center is the most important part of the board. Your army radiates more power there. Another important point is that you must be on the lookout for your opponent's threats. In other words, before you make your move, take a long hard look to see that your opponent cannot capture one of your pieces for free. Then take another long hard look (yeah, it's that important.) Look at checks as well. Your opponent gets to punch too so you have to keep a vigilant eye out for where his jabs can come from. Be sure to look at the whole board, being aware of every piece and pawn. Chess is like a busy street so you have to look both ways before crossing, especially since it's a street where the cars are purposely trying to hit you! So remember the opening principles of controlling the center, development and king safety (usually by castling early.) Most importantly, no more giving away free pieces!

I do think a lot of loss on this site could be prevented with more community.  I enjoy chatting in the daily games, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't in any live chess game.

Rather, if there were a better way for new players to learn how the community around here works- I find most people on the forums are nice enough, and helpful when playing daily.

Most members do not chat and some even block the chat. You need to join a couple clubs that are active and you can play Team Matches, chat and make friends in the clubs.
