FIDE Inquiries

So recently I've been more enthusiastic about chess. My rating for 5-10 minute chess sits at around 1650 and I was wondering what that translates to as a FIDE rating.

Furthermore, how does one obtain a FIDE rating? I live in Windsor, Ontario - right next to Detroit - so I'm not sure if I have to just wait until there are tournaments in my area or if there's some way I can compete online. Also, are there any qualifiers for entering one of these tournaments?

Although I am ambitious about chess, I doubt I'll ever reach Grandmaster status, but I would be more than content with a CM title. How hard is this to obtain for a person at my rating?

Any help you guys can provide would be fantastic and greatly appreciated =]

^ pretty sure i'm not eligible for that on the basis that i've never entered a tournament before and am 26 years old

thanks for the first link though, that clears up some of my questions (although not all)

How do you get a FIDE rating?  I know I saw it in a thread a little while ago.  here it is...

Thrillerfan details it in post #12.http://www.chess.com/forum/view/tournaments/fide-rating

Play in a FIDE rated tournament with FIDE rated players winning at least 1 in 3 games.  continue playing until you get 9 games in 2 years... then you earn an intial FIDE rating.
