FIDE Ratings

Hi,
I’ve been looking into getting a FIDE rating for a long time now and have never gotten round to it.
I am a member of the ECF and I have a FIDE ID, but I don’t know how I actually get a proper rating. I know I need to participate in an official over-the-board tournament but is there a specific sort of tournament I need to play in or will any one do? Does anyone know how to find local tournaments too, since I seem to find a few nearby but most are quite far?
I just feel like I’d be intruding by entering a tournament with rated players while I’m obviously not. But then again, I assume everyone has to play a tournament unrated at some point.

Also, does anyone know how I go about registering for a tournament? Would I book it through the ECF or FIDE?
