I know you have all heard the advice that once you have found a good move, look for a better one. Something else probably most of you know but I just discovered: when looking for your opponent's reply to your candidate move, once you think you have found it, look for a better one (then make sure you can refute both). Too many times, once I found a good reply by my opponent, I don't look any further only to end up not being able to handle their better reply.
