Cool mate in 4 tho

There is mate in 3.

1. Rf4 Kxg3 2. 0-0 Kh3 3. R1f3 mate.

For some reason the engine doesn't think that castling is still legal.

There is mate in 3

and no castling is not legal

Rh8, Kxg3 forced. Rg8+, Kh2 Kd2, Kh3, Rh1#

oh yeah the engine does that unless you say that castling is allowed when making the position

Your counting skills need some improvement. That's mate in 4, not 3.

Why is this thread so dead?

Mate in 3 if you attempt a ladder CM and after the king takes the pawn they move to either H3 or H4 on their next turn, after the Rook check.

A touch old, however ~ I have done analysis often enough from various positions, and I do not recall the engine asking me if I had castling rights from any of the positions I have entered. Nor do I recall an engine asking me if this is supposed to be a position, or a solvable puzzle.

Edited to add - good call on the castling.
