Are the chess tables still in Washington Sq park ?  I would love to visit there someday and play some blitz in the park. How strong are the hustlers there and how much do they normally bet on the game ?

The hustlers are usually somewhere around "expert" strength.  But I used to see Roman D there all the time and there was usually soe european IM holding forth at 1 or 2 tables that made a point of not playing each other.  Quite a little scence.  Stakes were variable from table to table, but the standard game witht he local hustlers was 2bucks per gamwith a 1dollar "clock rental" fee.  Pretty good set up for the "owner" of the table.  Games were 5 min, touch move.   And, bring your ear plugs if you are easily distracted.

It's been 3 or 4 years since I've been there as I live in California now.  I'd be surprised if the tables were gone.  They were made of concrete and built into the concrete "ground".  You bring your own sets and clocks.  I think there are/were about 15 tables.

Some of the most fun I ever had was playing blitz down by the river on River Walk in Augusta Ga. There was a gang of regulars that used to hang out there and we would always talk trash when playing blitz. Most of the trash talk was very funny and noone ever got mad/upset over it. I was not one of the "regulars" since I lived about 35 miles away but I would go by and play with them every chance I got, if I was lucky that was once a week at most.....

i think talking trash ruins the holiness of chess... it is a gentleman's game, that's why in tournaments talking trash is prohibited...

I see.  I think that's a little bit off topic though.  That's not any sort of name or epithet.  That's just a threat.

for me those name or epithet they are using is for the purpose of demoralizing your opponent or making him loose his cool or concentration... so that's my method i threated them that i will kill them for sure...

Talking trash ruins the "holiness" of the game but threatening to kill them keeps it holy I guess ?!  Surprised

You could easily introduce Cockney rhyming slang into all this too.  Bake=fishcake (or even flake, thus flinging a two-barbed prong) and dish=fish...

Right but if you don't use authentic slang no one will understand the insult.  Do you have any for me?

GG

I wish :)

The tables at Washington Square are gone. They're renovating the park and the chess section is still off limits. Ppl still play at Union Square and at the Village Chess Shop/Forum.

How about river monster? They always take the bait, and they're HUGE.

How long ago did they close the table down?  Also, are they going to put them back in?

They've been closed down for over a year now. They're renovating the entire park and I have heard that includes a new gaming section. As to when it will be done I'm not sure. It's usually wise to take whatever date the city tells you and then add a year. In the meantime try: Union Square The Sony Atrium Thompson Park The Village Chess Shop The Chess Forum Central Park chess and checker house(occasionally)

I'm glad to hear that the village chess shop is still going.  So many others have folded over the years...

If you were in New York about 30 years ago, you might have been called "fishcake" by me or Big Ralph. This would be followed up by, "Fishcakes are made not born." As for "tuna," that would become the last name of players named Charles due to the Starkist commercial. For an example of a Tuna (if you are still interested in chess), see http://www.chess.com/article/view/mating-the-tuna-in-deep-water-at-the-flea-house-of-the-august-moon

In France a great expression about a destroyed castling pawns barrier is "This is Roquefort", for Roquefort being a cheese (that smells, is really soft, has some "blue" in it because of bacterias development, and which taste could be compared with... You don't have the time to compare you vomitted before...), Roque being the french for "castling", and "fort" greatly translated by "strong".

As for me, I allways refer to bad players (in any game) with the term "fish", simply because I'm a poker player before everything (and I have to admit that sometimes chess is annoying for there are no bad beats ^^)

Well I was certainly there then. I'd have been about 18 at the time.  I spent time at that age at the Nassau chess club, the Gruman chess club, the syosset chess club (at the library) and at washington square park when I could get into town :)

Fishcake was often heard, as was "fishnakov".
