flagging : Is it unethical or part of the game

Flagging is not really chess

Supersekiboysam

Flagging in short time controls 5-min and under seems like part of the game. Especially without increment. I think at rapid chess you start to become a real POS playing on for a flag when you're down material.

technical_knockout

the clock is part of the game & more time is often compensation for having an inferior position:

if you can't convert then you don't deserve to win.

Hmmm extra salty FM tears 😢 baby! 😋

Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly IS "flagging"....???...

technical_knockout

flagging = running somebody out of time.

If you don't want flagging then play classical tbh... I also don't really understand the reasoning behind it being unethical? Like logically if you play to a drawn position where one has 2 minutes left and one has 10 seconds left that in my mind anyway says there is clearly a better player. If you flip it and say no time control at all ever then you could theoretically spend years calculating the perfect move and then nobody wins in the end do they... personally I love bullet and I love it at 1 minute, it's fun, exciting and easy to play a game when you haven't much spare time! Bullet is not classical, they are definitely 2 different games, I guess like ping-pong and tennis 💁‍♀️

If you think about it, "getting flagged" means that you ran your own clock out of time.

Both players are given the same amount of time to play with. If your flag falls, it means you chose to use up all your time.

Don't get mad at your opponent for something that you, yourself, did.

Why didn't they cancel american flag after them bombing Iraq, Libiya and Ygoslavia? Why didn't they give Magnus Carlsen choice to speak against or be canceled back in 2011? Just like Sergey Koryakin today.

For me, a win by flagging will always be more satisfying than a win on the board. The opponent getting angry in chat is just an added bonus.

That's the wrong time of flag you have in mind haha

Yep. I already found this out. Now I feel a little awkward. Still i will not deny what I said earlier.

You are correct, but chess.com had only a coupe of hundred members back then. I'm sure they would have canceled the American flag.

But then again, the owners are American and the company is American...

Maybe. It's one of those "kinda, sorta, not really" things. Talking about finances will get the topic locked, as has happened in other discussions about who is monetarily involved. When you say "owners" what do you mean specifically. What about where chess.com is located, and what about who finances it. Some people would consider those when determining ownership.

Nothing wrong with it. Time control is part of the game. If I had an hour per move, and my opponent had 5 minutes total, I could probably beat grandmasters rated much higher than me. If you're in a "winning position", then convert to a win.

Blueshirt

Time is the 17th piece... in short games it can be as powerful as a Queen if used right!

If a player loses on time it's because they took too long thinking about their moves. Blaming the opponent for that is self-defeating. It's better to learn from it and not to fall far enough behind on time that you lose from a winning position, in future.

No, flagging is not part of the game.
All FIDE competitions are with increment.
Standard time controls are 90|30, 15|10, 3|2.

what does flagging have to do with online chess? It´s about time control and in OTB you have also a clock! Or do you wanna go back to the times where games lasted for 20 hours till one of the opponents just fell to the floor? If you loose on time, you loose on time, no matter what is on the board. And if you´ve a queen and a rook more than your opponent and he mates you with a pawn and a rook or something it´s also over. Clock is a part of the game as everythig else.

I think anyone who complains about losing on time is a whiner. You know the rules and you accept them when you hit play. If they don’t give you enough time to think, then choose a longer time control. You’re not going to get flagged if you manage your time, though you may lose because you didn’t have time to calculate well.

In principle you r right of course but you basically force me to lose on time or retire from chess. !sadge

Ik it's offtopic but why you can't use different alphabets e.g. kyrillic? Technically it should be possible I guess.
