For Fischer Fans

It was interesting to read this, thanks for posting. I believe that I've seen parts of this article paraphrased in a couple of books by Soltis but the direct quotes are a bit different; literary license I guess...

Thanks again, to our resident chess historian.
Wonder what tv program had plane tickets to Yugoslavia as a prize?

Did you know, his father had a phenomenal spatial ability 7:18 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eDhdhvIBYs

The TV program was "I've Got a Secret." He appeared in May, 1958, and stumped the panel. The panel include Dick Clark. His secret was that he was the U.S. chess champion.
The made-up newspaper headline for Bobby was "Teen-Ager's Strategy Defeats all Newcomers." Dick Clark asked if what he did made people happy. Fischer responded, "It made me happy." Garry Moore asked him how long he had been playing chess. Fischer responded that he had been playing since he was six, but that he had not been playing seriously until age 9. For stumping the panel on I’ve Got a Secret, Sabena Airlines provided two complimentary round trip airline tickets for Bobby and his sister, Joan, already a registered nurse at age 20, to travel to Russia, with a stopover in Belgium, Sabena’s home country. At the end of the show, Fischer almost tripped over the microphone wire and fell as he was leaving the stage.
Batgirl, you are marvellous!
What happened to Joan Fischer? Was she good?
And I learnt a new word:
"A gamine is a slim, often boyish, elegant, wide-eyed young woman who is, or is perceived to be, mischievous, teasing or sexually appealing." (Wiki)
Thanks for posting!

THANK YOU, Bill Wall! We are lucky to have you & batgirl here to cover all aspects of chess history!
Gamine often carries the connotation "half starved" and the sexual appeal tends to have vulnerability as an element.
I've come across the television appearance before but the stuff about Bobby's mother is new to me. Not sure if she comes across as a likeable worried mum or just a tiny bit weird. "People stealing everything he had" in particular doesn't ring quite true.

A good Bobby Fischer documentary http://youtu.be/lwLM9bgE3tY
An even better one is ((Bobby Fischer Against The World)) on "HBO GO"...

omg ... thanks for the info!

Mrs Fischer : "I was really worried. I could just see him sleeping in a train station somewhere and people stealing everything he had"
She was prescient, just 40 years too soon.
