There are probably over 1000 names for openings the way you describe-2 or 3 moves. Worthless to me, also (the names, that is), but, these initial moves may dictate the progression of the game. For example, a game started with e4 is usually a faster game than if you start d4.
To see what a formation is named after 6-8 moves, go to the game explorer link here (under "learn") and put the moves in. The site will show the names of the opening or defense.
thx T! i tried the game explorer link, but 2 moves deep it asks for premium membership, which i intend to get, but haven't yet.
i have pictures in my head, formations, and variations of those formations in case i get disruptively attacked and need to adjust.
but i don't know what they mean, and don't know how to look them up, perfect the sequence of advances, etc. they're just patterns dancing in my head.
is there a simple way to make a board show my formations ... explore my own thots, print my boards, etc. ?
the pros making videos seem to be able to do this ... i just wanna make some formation pics to think about.

365chess.com has a free opening explorer. If you're just looking to analyze a position, chess.com has an analysis board that you can use from your browser. Just go under the "Resources" tab and click on the "Analysis Board/Editor". I use it all the time to mess around with positions that I'd like to explore.
rookie here,
when i look up openings, i find only 1-3 moves, and it means little to me.
if i'm playing, and neither sides attacks for 6-8 moves, i get to set up my desired formation, far beyond just an opening.
what are these developed formations called, and how can i look up images and names for them?
