How do I set up an initial position (e.g. the najdorf) when making two engines battle it out on the Fritz 18 user interface? Please help.

Says the guy who is clearly cheating in his games. How about you learn chess.

I am not cheating, first of all. Second, I am making stockfish and komodo play each other, I am not cheating using the engines.

I don't do Fritzy, but I'll bet you haven't even looked at the Help file...

I have, but I didn't find anything there. If you do, please let me know. happy.png

It seems to me you just need to create an "Openings DB" with only the one Najdorf position you're interested in, and have both engines use that book.

When I said the cheating thing, I wasn't talking about you desert_chess. I was talking to that other guy who commented. Saying learn to play chess but then you see his page and it's closed with games that show he clearly cheated lol sorry about that, I should have made that a little more clear.

Fritz 18 doesn't even let me do an engine match. It keeps saying "error could not load engines". I spent $80 on that program, what's going on? Reinstalling didn't work.

It probably works; I suspect you just haven't learned how to use it yet. It's possible that you didn't correctly install Stockfish and Komodo. Have you tried running them separately?

Maybe try setting up an engine tournament with a couple of preinstalled engines that came with Fritz. Try getting that tournament going, then try it with the other two.

Stockfish wasn't one of the ones that came with it. The other 2 that came with it were Mate 2.2 and "crafty". My laptop has loads of other problems though so it could just be that I don't know.

Yeah, try setting up an engine match between Mate 2.2 and Crafty. See if that gets you anywhere.

Don't ya love Windows? lol

Windows 11 was a disaster, should never have upgraded from windows 10. Windows 10 was supposed to be Microsoft's last release anyway, so what happened? I also have been having trouble installing stockfish on windows.

Microsoft never officially stated that Windows 10 would be the last Windows. (It was just one developer talking off the cuff, and the news media ran with it.) Anyway, from what I've heard, there's not much difference between 10 and 11, other than a few minor tweaks. You could always reinstall Win 10, but you'd have to know what you're doing. Not recommended for the faint of heart.

Even if you went back to Win 10, support will go away for it in October 2025 (a bit less than 2-1/2 years).

I can't give any advice on your Stockfish install. I only have one Windows machine (Win 10), and I haven't installed any chess stuff on that one.

When you click on engine match, right below the Engine vs engine tab, you should see the tabs white, and black. Click on one of them, let's say white, and click define. From there, you should see the list of kibitzers(analysis engines) that you have installed on fritz. Do the same thing for black, and you're ready! BTW, I was having the same problem too when I first got Fritz, you kinda need to explore the software to learn about a lot of it's features.

Sorry, I can't help you more than that, I don't have Fritz. I was lucky that I even found the manual. :-)

Maybe you can figure it out, or some other Fritz user can help. Good luck.

Thanks for the help. I've scoured through the documentation, and I didn't find anything about that. Still, thanks
