^ this actually isn't that obvious, king is a male character for sure but it's vague for the queen. In eastern countries queen is called Vizier, right hand of the king.. and he also is a male.
Bishops are called Elephants, so they are just animals 
but gender is unknown..
The bishop and knights are definitely male if we look at our history, rook is castle so it has no gender, the pawns are the common people of the kingdom so they are of both genders. However, if you go by the promotion logic, then all pieces are female except the king. But that doesn't seem too promising given that the world at that time was run by only men.
