That would only be punishing to the players they face. If some 1600 player played against this former cheater whose real skill level is 1700+ and lost, they would lose an unjustifiably large amount of points.
General amnesty for admit cheating - an idea?

Or people could just stop taking it so seriously. Once a chess site turns into a witch hunt the site may as well close, it ruins the atmosphere.
I just dont understand why people get so upset about people that cheat you dont lose anything by losing a game of chess. Instead of worrying if the person is cheating or not worry about your moves and try to improve upon those.

Sure, if the individual notifies the chess.com staff before he's aware he's been accused or detected. A rating reset, trophy removal, and probation period where his games are much more likely to be scanned for engine-use sounds reasonable.

Geez... There are so many forums about cheaters. A very low percentage of people actually cheat. Talk about the second coming of the Salem Witch Trials...

Then we can let all our rapists, murderers, home invaders, child molesters and armed robbers out of our prisons. They won't do it again! Ask 'em. They'll tell ya'. Go hug a tree for Mother Teresa. Hug a bunny. Eat some lettece. When they did something wrong, they knew what they were doing. Whether they were home invaders or chess cheaters they have the same sociopathic attitude that society doesn't matter. Rules don't apply to them. The only way these people face reality is getting convicted and sentenced. Most cheaters are punks who haven't grown up enough to accept rules. Some of these punks are doing 20 to life in prisons around the world. "Let me out. I made a mistake, but I found Jesus." Bottom line. We don't need these people around us. Are you a chess cheater whose born again? Come on down. Right. I am sick of listening to whinners on Chess.com. "Oh, my pal got kicked off. He's the best, most honest, guy you would ever want to meet." No thanks. To paraphrase Goerge Bernard Shaw, "Hell is filled with chess amatuers".
"Dear Admin, Can you please let my grandmother come back and play on Chess.com? She's sorry. She won't do it again."

This would not a bad reason to turn around! But is not the theme here. -
To give people a chance to leave a wrong way,- that is here the theme

Billyldle, not that I agree with the OP, but there are some shades of gray between murdering and cheating in chess.
Offtopic: I would be even more worried if he had found Jesus, Jesus wasn't the hippie he's psyked up to be.

Haha wow dude. Chill.
This is a bad idea. You sound like a liberal. I say that because it reminds me of the people that want to give illegal aliens our social security money, even though they have not paid into the account or do not even belong in this country. They also want to give them health care. You are hurting those that play by the rules. This is bad idea. Enough said.

If they are done cheating they can just stop. Their rating will adjust
naturally, they can once again have pride in their game.
If they cheat here they cheat in life. It will catch up to them.
In the mean time use them to improve your game.

I think this is a good solution however since the rules are clear on this matter banning the person would be more effective. On some sites people are given repeated warnings and they continue to cheat.

Let set up a Truth and Reconciliation Commission. I'm sure the International Court of Justice would be happy to provide us with a presiding judge.
So I think using engines or other kinds of cheating is always a theme at chess.sites. . We know it all and it has been often discussed.-
So may be some player have given in such a temptation, but after a while they regret it. But now they are in a dilemna. If they admit, they fear that their account will be closed forever. So they go on with it.-
Would it perhaps be an idea to offer those who regret a way back? Perhaps one month time to accuse themselves and accept a backrating to 1200?
This is only an idea. What do you think about it?
