How hard is it to play to a draw?

Yeah it's a big deal and a great for you. That normally just doesn't happen.

I'm rated around 1350 (on chess.com) and just drew with a guy who's 2035 USFC tournament rated. I'm pretty proud of myself. But I'm also wondering if drawing is just a pretty easy thing to do. I played the game with only one goal in mind: winning, as I do every game. And I remember it being a big deal that a young Magnus drew with Kasparov.

But should I consider this any sort of accomplishment?

Think of it like this.  A player rated 700 below their opponent has an expected score of about 2%, or 0.020.

What this means is that if you played that same player 1000 times, you should, in theory, score roughly 20 points all told across the 1000 games.

You scored 0.5 in 1 game!  Significantly higher than expected.  A pace of 500 out of 1000 compared to the 20 you are expected to get.  That's a major accomplishment!

Can you post the game?

Given the rating disparity you should be happy with the draw.  Playing for a draw is difficult, although it's much easier with white.  It's good that you always play to win.  Playing for a draw nearly always leads to losing

I'm surprised that someone 2000+ USCF is only 1863 on chess.com.  Good rule of thumb is that Chess.com corr. rating = USCF + 300, at least until you get to the top levels (2200+).  My USCF is about 1750 and chess.com about 2050, which is about right.

I thought you played alright.  No clear mistakes.  I think black missed a win around move 47.  Rather than Rxd3, I think he should have played a3, then Ra2, to force your rook to the first rank, then rook b1 and a1Q.  The only defense would be 47...a3 48. Ra2 (which stops Rb2 because a3 hangs) but then black plays Rxd3 and your rook is now totally passive in front of the a3 pawn.  Black should then win without difficulty, (assuming I'm not missing anything).  You did well to gain rook activity and force black on the defensive despite that fact that his pawns were move advanced and his king was in a good defensive position

Nice game!

Well played. You could have won with 36.Nf6 and if 36...Ke6 37.g4 and you're still forking his Rooks.

I thought about forking his rooks. But then I saw Ke6 and figured he would just take mine back. I never thought to just back up my rook. Bummer. Now that would have been an accomplishment lol
