I'm rated around 1350 (on chess.com) and just drew with a guy who's 2035 USFC tournament rated. I'm pretty proud of myself. But I'm also wondering if drawing is just a pretty easy thing to do. I played the game with only one goal in mind: winning, as I do every game. And I remember it being a big deal that a young Magnus drew with Kasparov.
But should I consider this any sort of accomplishment?
Think of it like this. A player rated 700 below their opponent has an expected score of about 2%, or 0.020.
What this means is that if you played that same player 1000 times, you should, in theory, score roughly 20 points all told across the 1000 games.
You scored 0.5 in 1 game! Significantly higher than expected. A pace of 500 out of 1000 compared to the 20 you are expected to get. That's a major accomplishment!
Yeah it's a big deal and a great for you. That normally just doesn't happen.
