Wise advice! I remember in a tournament when I hardly got any sleep the night before, in my first game I played 1.d4 instead of 1.e4, thinking I was playing 1.e4! This was down to tiredness. Having never played a queens pawn game i lost quickly. Tongue out

UltraLaser

What ways are there of preparing in terms of the chess itself?

It happened to me too. Also play sth familiar. U dont want to spend too much time on the opening!

Yeah, that's a good point. I guess I'm in a dilemma atm though, because I currently play a line against the french which i know quite a lot about, but hate to play - and recently I looked at another line which I do like the look of, but don't really know much theory at all - is it worth learning all the theory of it?

finalunpurez

Just play the exchange variation against the french. Its easy and less theory.

UltraLaser

Lol, that's the variation that I have learnt and hate to play Tongue out the other one I am looking at and liking is the french tarrasch.

finalunpurez

Play the line that u like. It might give u better results.

Sleep well, and do tactical exercises.

You can also practice playing with this time-control on Internet.

Play openings you feel confident with, whatever their objective value.

Doing tactical exercises sounds like a good idea, so they are fresh when you are playing otb. Playing the same time control also seems like a good idea so that you have a rough idea of how to use the time correctly.

What about playing against the vastly different rated players? Should I play in a different way against a 2100 to a 1400 for example? Any suggestions are gratefully taken. Smile

UltraLaser

Also, how often should I play online in the lead-up to the tournament? Thanks

azziralc

sleep well before the tournament so you won't be exhausted during the game :)

The stronger your opponent, the more objective you must be Smile

ChessisGood

If you are playing a way stronger opponent and need a win, you may be forced to go into tactical craziness to survive.

UltraLaser

@hicetnunc & ChessisGood
OK, objective and tactical craziness against high opps it is then Laughing

Argonaut13

What I do is practice allot, go to sleep earlier, and just relax my mind.

UltraLaser

Thanks Shadowknight911 & Argonaut13 for helpful advice Smile
