Why is chess not at the olympics?

Chess is literally, by definition, a board game. It's not a food. It's not a spaceship.

It's a game, played with little pieces, on a board. A board game.

Besides, categorizing it as a "sport" doesn't somehow elevate it to a grander position.

It's not like a "sport" is somehow superior to a "board game", despite what some people appear to think. It seems like there's an insecurity among some players, where they feel that chess should qualify as a "sport", otherwise they feel slightly and/or insulted.

It's as if they refuse to be called a "chess player", and will only accept being called a "chess athlete".

Why? Chess is a pretty incredible game. It's rather prestigious, as far as board games go. The general population assumes that chess players are, by default, intelligent and/or brilliant. It's not exactly like chess has a bad reputation.

I mostly agree. I say be careful of what you ask for, you just might get it. For those who think chess should become a sport, what would be the result?

Right now chess is basically the king of games. It's the big fish in the small pond. Which is the bigger and better game, chess or Sorry? I think everyone can agree it's chess. But what happens if chess becomes a sport? Then it competes with golf, basketball, football, baseball, and hundreds of other real sports.

All of the sudden people who play chess are no longer brilliant or intelligent. They become dullards and losers because they are playing one of the lowliest sports.

I think if people want chess to be in the Olympics there should be a method where chess players could play in their own tournament with other board games. We could call it Mind Sport Olympiads. Or even  better still chess could have it's OWN special competition. We could call it a chess Olympiad. Probably never happen, but it seems like a good idea.

You have apparently missed an uneventful event named Chess Olympiad.

43 of them happened so far.

But... well, this was the least ignorant of your comments.

^He was being sarcastic.

Evidently you're too ignorant to realise that.

The irony hurts

Never happen. If it did, there would be no reason for wanting chess in the actual Olympics.

Chess can't be in the olympics it doesn't require the same physical capabilities as Football, tennis and various other sports.

Same answers as the last time you asked that. If necessary, go back and read the responses from when you asked that before. Asking again doesn't change the answers.

That doesn't matter chess should be in the Olympics because it's a sport.

What other board games should be in the Olympics?

Only if you use VERY heavily weighted pieces.

Olympic sports are about physical prowess. Board games are not, unless you're deluded. Obviously you have to be fit enough that you don't drop dead in the middle of the game, or you'd lose. Saying chess is physical is as daft as saying running is mental because you have to have a brain to work out where to run.

Shooting is an Olympic sport. How much muscle do you need to pull a trigger?

Actually, running is quite a mental sports, I am a runner and I know many runners who can back me up on that. Also, I thought chess was considered a sport by the Olympic federation or whatever it's called?

Any board game with millions of players operating under multiple active national and international organizations.

Many boxers will say things like 90% of boxing is mental.
