Will going to club meeting be worth it?

There's a local club that has chess events every week. It sounds fun, but I'm sure I'll be the lowest player there, never playing OTB chess. Is there any value in playing against players probably twice my rating and getting dumpsterd every game?

I assume they've timed games with no way to replay them and review them.

Find out what they do for sure. Some clubs also have casual play available and lower rated players as well.

It'll probably be casual play. But will I take anything from playing against higher ratings?

What's the big deal? You might lose all your games. So what? Everyone loses to someone. You might surprise yourself and win a game too.

Clubs often play slower games, perhaps 30 minutes for each player. You can write down the score of the games you play. Practicing that is very important for tournament games.

Some clubs have tournaments with one game played every week. Don't be afraid to join.

I would guess that some of the players will spend a couple of minutes to review the games with you.

There's only one way to find out -- Go.  Spend an hour or so and all your questions will be answered.

At a club, players like me can remember the game, and go over it move by move afterwards if you want tongue.png

Also you can record the games on a notepad, no one would think badly of you for it, if anything they'd admire the idea that you want to go over the games later.

Surrounding yourself with talented, motivated players who may possess a lot more knowledge than you will increase your playing tremendously. You can learn a lot by being around such players and watching, hearing them discuss moves, and maybe even playing them and asking pointers. Assume you’ll lose, but decide you’ll learn a lot from it.

Most club players are pretty pleasant people, and even if you’re the weakest player in the club, most of them will be willing to go over the games with you and give you some pointers. There is no better way to improve than by playing stronger players.

That said, you will inevitably run into some real creeps, just as you will on chess.com, but they are the exceptions
