There's no need for public apology. The Public isn't offended.

The comments were made publicly in a thread started by KingSideInvasion.

I mentioned in some forums serious question should be asked in Quora. I assume OP is serious. But he can't expect  in a public forum All Agreeable replies. Every one has rights to express each opinion. If the thread starter can't stand criticism in chess.com, go to Quora.

Is it a matter of criticism or invented motivation?

("... I get wanting to sound like a better chess player than you are. …")

Was there an actual need to learn to be realistic about abilities or was that an invention, too?

I assume OP is now in Quora asking the same question

Quora would bring 99% of the posters here to tears.

I can only assume that since the OP has not responded to any of my posts he either didnt read them, agrees with them, disagrees with them, or simply doesnt care.

Perhaps there was a drop in interest in participation after comments like

"... I get wanting to sound like a better chess player than you are. …"

and a reference to a need to learn to be realistic about abilities.

And apparently a lie.

I think Spongey may be having a breakdown...eventually, after many years of hard toil, posting reams of chess literature links which may be 'possibly of interest' loses its lustre, and one must plant one's flag in a corner of the Internet and fire ones lexicographal cannon at the pirates.

I had to look up half those words.

This is unprecedented!

And apparently a lie.

Or apparently a comment about what might seem possible when one doesn't know what IMBacon will be posting, about eleven minutes later?

Setting the timer...

A quote comes to mind, how does it go?

Better to keep your mouth shut and let others think you're a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt.

Something like that.

"Of course, weakness is going to be part of the play of a beginner, but what purpose is served by insisting on referring to it all the time?"

Because if you want to get better at chess, you need to fix your weaknesses, because that's what's holding you back. Worrying about your "style" is a complete waste of time. If you are missing tactics, or giving yourself a bad bishop all the time, or losing even end games, who care's what your "style" is. Step 1 is to get better at making good moves, your style will find you

Great comment.  I couldn't have said it better.

Take KingSideInvasion for example. Can you identify a specific sentence indicating a lack of interest in working on weaknesses?

"Building a repertoire ... The first step is to think about your personal style. Do you prefer open, tactical positions or closed, strategic positions? Does an attack on your king make you nervous, or are you happy so long as you have a counter-attack? Do you prefer main lines, or something slightly offbeat? ..." - GM John Nunn (1998)

Were he (and others) promoting a “complete waste of time”?

Is that in spite of or because of him being a really, really bad singer who appeals only to 12 year old boys?

That must be a running Phil Collins joke, because i remember hearing that back in the 80's

Is there any reason to believe that KingSideInvasion was doing anything other than use "style" as a quick way to refer to the difference between the openings that he had been using and the openings that he was thinking of adopting (in what might perhaps be seen as an attempt to acquire increased flexibility)?

Honestly...I do think Neal Pert is the best, but its been a running joke between myself and a friend.  Thats why i go to my favorite Phil Collins.  I also think Chester Thompson, and Gene Krupa are right up there too.

Yeah, Gene Krupa was awesome.  Never heard of Chester Thompson.

My style is also positional and sometimes try to play tactical. My advice: don't do it!!

Yeah, Gene Krupa was awesome.  Never heard of Chester Thompson.

Chester was the tour drummer for Genesis, and Phil Collins.  He was also the drummer for the jazz band Weather Report.

Gene Krupa - Buddy Rich drum battle.

IMKeto

Hes not a crap singer, but hanging out with, and performing with Peter Gabriel in the 60's and 70' has to mess with you.

Ok, thanks.   I like Genesis too.   And I didn't say that Phil Collins was THE best singer of all-time.  Just one of the best.   I'm not 12 either.   I'm 56 and grew up on classic rock.  I'd put Dennis De Young, Steve Walsh, Steve Perry and David Lee Roth ahead of Phil Collins, as well as Michael Jackson, Luciano Pavarotti, Ariana Grande, Christina Aguilera and Whitney Houston.   Forgive me if I left anyone out.   But yeah, Phil Collins is in my top 10 or 20 too.
