There's no excuse for bad manners. I too have had people taunt me in live games.
Personally, I like the "actions speak louder than words" approach. On the last occassion I received a diatribe about how poorly I was playing and how my opponent was going to crush me.
I politely replied that he may be right, but I was happy to learn from my losses and simply enjoyed playing.
He was checkmated on my next move

I think I'm going to do that on a quiet night in the forums this week--just type in random words and bump whatever threads come up. People will be waking up to find threads from years ago in their "Topics I have posted in" section
Plato might have played a form of chess since dice were around in his time. The modern configuration of dice is about 3,000 years old and games based on six pieces (chess) or six locations (backgammon) were in high demand. with strong government (greece, rome, china) crooked dice were used less and people could gamble with confidence. the chequer board is ancient.
It's not just a "gentleman's" game, as women play too, but I agree with the OP that it IS just a game (unless you are making your entire living off of it as a professional player, where you have a lot on the line and the gloves have to come off)

You should have finished the GAME and WON. Poor losers deserved to be punished. If he was 700 points ahead of you and you were beating him, doesn't him accusing you of tricking him just seem like a really lame excuse for him playing poorly? Lol...
