Getting FIDE Rated

How do I get FIDE rated? What website do I need to go to to see local tournaments. How many games do I need to play? Thanks

Jumping into this topic, is it better to try a FIDE tournament now and get a shitty rating, or only join one later on when I'm better and jump straight to a higher rating?(until then, non-FIDE tournaments can suffice)
