Getting worse over time

I used to be 1550 standard, now I'm 1410 and sinking. I keep losing to players with ratings that I never lost to and I don't know what I'm doing differently or what I need to fix. It's so frustrating!

Well, I don't think your rating can go negative, so the pain will stop at some point. Smile

Looking at your profile stats, I see you play a huge array of different time controls especially longer games. So that's not the problem. You, like me, play a lot though when you do play. You may be getting a little burned out. Some will suggest taking some time off and sure, that may help but I've also personally tried just pushing through it and that's actually worked out much better. What you need to do is change things up. Focus on a different aspect of the game to study, change your study methods from computer to primarily book and OTB, play different time controls. Anything to catch that spark again so that you don't want to do anything else.

I think everything will work out fine for you. Athletes, CEO's, artists - Everyone has off periods.

osfan37..last year started on chess.com with std.15/10..reached 1682..

dropped next 10 games ..1593..due to bug problem(unable to see pieces

on the board/forced to play with no knight sometimes(not visible)..piece

dropping one square short..eg.my Q to take op's Bishop.Q could drop

one square short right in the fork of their pawn...and resign only..

shifted to team matches.tremendous progress..due to active participation

in vote chess..it was like free coaching..interacting with 1900-2150

players improved my game considerably..they would tell u in simple

language why a move is good or not good..which u can't make out on your

own..now returned to std15/10..but slow unsteady internet conn.played

havoc and reduced to 1500 in just 5 games lost..also due to fact unable

to adjust to new time frame..players 200 points down also easily defeated me because i have just enough time to look at board make my

moves..no time to study opponent's position or his likely strategies..

remedy..if internet conn.interrupted ,would immediately change port..

it takes 2 or 3 mnts to reconnect by ISP..but better than lose on timeout

or game abandoned..now 5 to six games in a row win is not difficult for

me and returning to my normalstatus of rating..for your guidance and

information only..

Sounds like you could need a day off. I got so burnt out when I was younger I quit for several years and actually just got back into chess. So far I'm just playing a couple games a day then going over them and looking for ways to improve. Go over your recent losses and look for patterns like repeatedly hanging pieces or dropping pawns etc. Don't be afraid to take time off if you feel you need it, you don't want to wind up hating the game like I did.

Ratings can definitely go down. After about 50 years old or so, many people lose rating points. But still, some people don't, so maybe it's a lack of practice or something. Just stay fresh- do tactics training and spend at least an hour on chess a day if you're serious about it.

When I lose I'm compelled to play more

well I think of such frustrations as tests of character.

I also think it indicates that you've got some fundemental work to do with the your understanding of the basics of chess- you 'rise' in ELO meet people that have a superior understanding of peice coordination, tactics, and endgames- then fall back down.

the problem is its too easy to think of your your failures as being 'simple' blunders.  yes.  perhaps you did blunder- but perhaps you were in a poor position when you did.

at any rate, rating Doesn't come easy.  Good luck and keep at it!

My rating fluctuates up to 150 points (blitz time controls). At the high end my rating will be 1850 or so. Low end is 1700. I've lost 100 points in a single day where literally everything goes wrong. I can't beat anyone no matter the rating. Then it passes and I go on a tear winning games again. So imagine how the 1820 player feels, when I'm 1700 but getting hot again. He's probably like, "WTF, I can't beat a 1700 now? I should just quit." But the fact is we're about the same strength. So you never know who you're playing or what their range is. If you're losing games, maybe you're just unlucky and getting paired with people at the bottom of their range. Just keep playing; eventually it turns back around. But I'll agree it can be aggregating when you're in the middle of a losing streak.

You must be burned out. Take a vacation to a resort or massage parlor.

Absolutely. Sounds like a trip to Vegas is in order. Legal brothels all over the place in Nevada - find yourself a nice clean call girl. Trannies your thing? They got them too.

Yes agree with kevinludwig..chess is so unpredictable..I may lose to

a 1300 and next game can defeat a 1800 .

I really feel i play worse than couple months before. That might be for numerous reasons.

I spend too much time on chess every day without brake. Maybe is time for a couple week rest or more , but i fear if i stop for too long it might wish to never resume for example whole summer, then my skills will drop even more.

- I stopped bullet and reduced a lot blitz. Now i play cassually here and there low rated players for fun, but i don't push myself and i feel i lost my tactical eye.

- Indeed my tactics droped a lot. Just couple weeks ago my peak was 2196 and yesterday i droped to 1980~... even simple tactics i just blow away.

- I feel like i got worse... But i am still a lot better than those below me.

- Maybe is just need fresh air. Or this is all part of the improving cycle everyone experience. To learn something new, you have to not only change your old understandings, but completely erase them if there were wrong. And boy i really do a lot of wrong things.. for example garbage openings...

It's time to start playing real chess... i have mostly time wins in my chess life and lucky escapes. What a patzer i am.

For lower/intermediate players the key for fastest way to improve is just one thing. Solve tactics and play (not bullet or 3 min chess) chess vs higher rated and analyze games. When i see chesscom profiles of 2000 rated blitz players with uscf 1900 OTB or more i often check their tactic trainer stats.. all of them had solved like between 5000-15 000 tactics... and they probably erased couple times the counter...

I'm getting worse in everything every day - so what?
