GM to IM?

Suppose a GM say in his forties and currently out of form and kinda washed out, drops say many games against IM's, then will he lose his GM title and become an IM himself?  or is it like "once you're a GM, then you're always a GM". Are there any rules regarding this?

No, the GM title is for life no matter how low their rating. IM and Master titles are not.

Ohh!

IM pfren, thanks for clarifying my doubt!

ALL titles are for life, unless one achieves a higher one.

You're right....did that change in the past 40 years? I could swear that wasn't the case in the 70's.

Don't be fooled by Pfren, he was once a GM, but got it revoked due to dropping many games against IMs.

A lot of the wannabees are always posting about how to be an IM/GM etc etc, but it seems to me a lifetime title whilst quite a honour could be a little sad for aging players who naturally lose some of their former strength.

Titles don't alter pairings or prize money so who cares.

Aging players should be proud and happy to keep their titles.

Titles in chess are like an honorific. They're a mark of accomplishment, rather than an active status that must be defended. It's a bit like the honorific of "doctor" - for example, one who has been a medical doctor generally retains the title of "Dr." for life, even if they've retired from practice.

That's the way I see it anyway.

Someone lost his GM title when he was caught cheating in a tournament...
