Go versus Chess

It might be worthwhile for me to develop a passing ability to play if only because I do both Chinese and Japanese tea ceremonies and practice Soto Zen. So I can see myself sitting across the board at some point.

Go does not have any horseys.

brisket

But they do call it a knights jump when you put your stones in a L shape.

A point that is either for or against go, depending on how good you are, is that the pieces are better suited for throwing at your opponent if you lose.

Where is the "like" button where you need it?

beardogjones

It is even more thrilling when the pieces are either white or dark chocalte chips!

Go Pros and Cons:

Pro: a pretty engaging manga turned anime series "Hikaru no Go"

Con: the challenge of even obtaining the supplies for traditional play

I actually got a cheap set of stones and a board online, it is not the same experience as playing on a real board and the stones are in a plastic bag but it is a good beginers set.

three_patch_problem

this thread has caused me to dig out my copy of the many faces of go... damn you...

Fangz0

i prefer chess because of the various pieces and their powers as opposed to go's simple white and black dots...

ivandh

I find that the apparent simplicity of Go makes it all the more frustrating when you get your ass kicked.

I remember the first game I ever played I thought it was going to be an easy game, I later leared I could not have been more wrong.

Chess is a beautiful fusion of tactics and strategy. With Go, all you have to do is learn a few stone-patterns and then it's on to purely positional playing. Kasparov would have hated it. If Chess didn't exist, nobody would know Kasparov's name, or Tal's name, or Topalov's.

Michael Adams and Karpov might or might not be known, but it's extremely unlikely given that both are Westerners. There isn't exactly a huge demand for Go in the USA or in Russia.

Wrinn

It should be noted that there are actually MORE Go players than Chess, sheerly because of geographical population.  Lack of a demand for Go in the USA or Russia doesn't imply that Chess has a larger audience than Go.  In those areas sure, but not world wide.

RyuM1

hikaru no go was brilliant though

shame there's no chess anime :( there are a few shogi ones but that's not the same

Kingpatzer

Another big thumbs up for Hikaru here.

Personally, I've never quite understood why the two games are compared to one another. Aside from being board games played between two players, they really have nothing in common.

mrguy888

They are compared because they are the two big games in the same genre. They are both super complex games of perfect information and contain no chance in the game mechanics.

The pieces (stones?) are boring. Look like a bunch of black and white m+ms. That's all I can comment on since I don't really know the rules. I checked Wikipedia's entry on the game....... The rules seem boring, too. There must be something to it, though, as 900 billion people play it worldwide.....

Where are the the other 894 billion people in the world hiding?

beardogjones

Go sucks....

It is just a variant of chess for people who can't remember how the pieces

move and what checkmate entails.

GnosticMoron

Hikaru No Go has messed with my mind so over the last few days that I dreamed in Go last night.
