I'd definitely use a chess opening. Checkers openings don't work nearly as well in chess games.
Are you fairly new at chess? If so, don't worry too much about the openings. Try to control the center, learn general opening principles, bla, bla, bla.
Here are some opening principles:
The question is really to unspecific and broad, you have to take into account your playing strenght, personal chess style, and preferences (positions you are comfortable playing)
If you are new to chess, you should use simple logical openings that follows basics principles of chess and creates easy development. Spanish is therefore excellent for you, every opening move there is logical, simple and follows the chess principles of devolopment.
Examples of openings you should avoid are openings which avoids or delays development of the pieces for other structural gains, namely the french defence and caro-kaan. These are absolutely not bad openings, just not optimal for beginners.
Later you should try to study and play as many openings as possible, to get a flexible thinking system and broad training, when playing the white pieces, I recommend you start with 1. e4, because you will be facing alot of different openings that way (open or closed siciilian, with all the variations in the sicilian, scandinavian, french, caro-kaan, italian game, spanish, King´s gambit and the list goes on)
If you are new to chess, you should focus on learning primarily, you must not be afraid to trying a new opening because of fear of losing, if you keep on learning alot of openings and study alot, you will definetly improve your game. Never play the same opening over and over again, you will start to think mechanically, start thinking about the position later in the game, and you will hamper your creativity that way.
If you know your style already, you should orient your opening repetoiare to openings that you genereally are comfortable with, and maybe playing other openings when it´s not tournament.
There will be a Chess Tournament this April. Which opening should I use? What is the best technique can I use?
