Who is (or was) the all time greatest chess player? I think it was Fischer

What makes you think Fischer was the greatest? I mean, he maybe was a Picasso of the chess. Maybe. It because supposedly he has reached the top, but he has stopped before shows his Guernica to the world.

It is a problematic question. But if I needed to answer, it would be Kasparov; although I do not have any decisive argument for that.

It's all subjective. People are going to say Kasparov but I too think it was Fischer. Kasparov fans are going to say he was higher rated and such but he had computer engine analysis and so did Carlsen. Fischer studied chess by himself and literally swept his candidate matches on the way to championship. Who else can you say has done that on top of 'game of the century', 'youngest grandmaster' (of the time), created a chess variant, created increments and was the highest rated player (of the time)?

Seriously his life was chess. Seeing him disappear was a very big disappointment in the chess world. If he continued to play, I personally believe he would've been world champ 'till his death. With the exclusion of Spassky, Fischer personally stated that all of his opponents have crumbled before him one way or another.

Carlsen, his ELO and the fact he drew Kasparov when he was 13 speaks for itself.

I think it was Fischer because even though he was out if practice for 20 years, he still came back and beat Spassky with ease.

Carlsen ....

@nonconform my point is, Spassky was one of the worlds top players, yet Fischer had not had that kind of competition for 20 years, and he still didn't have much trouble beating him.

I think it was Fischer because even though he was out if practice for 20 years, he still came back and beat Spassky with ease.

...in a meaningless rematch when Spassky was ranked 90-odd in the world, hardly an achievement. Fischer only held the World Title once then went nuts. Kasparov for me.

Let's change this up. Capablanca gets my vote just to change this up.

Morphy is good.

So is Kasparov and Capablanca.

I also like Fischer.

It's not Fischer or Kasparov. It's Capablanca.

I think it may be between Kasparov and Fischer. Morphy was also great but I Think Carlsen may be up there as well since he played Kasparov to a draw when he was 13.
