A friend played this game at this afternoon's tournament. The rating difference between the two was huge. Can you guess the rating of the winner (white)??!!

600

MagnusWoody

no no, not your own rating! The rating of white.

Gintama

between 1300-1500

I cant really tell because its a blitz game and anything can happen

Is it a trick question? Did he have no rating because this was his first offical game.

Muspelheim
2000+ ?

The rating of white is 1420 and he's 14 years old. Black is rated 1882 and is in his thirties. Just goes to show you you can't rely on ratings!

Aye, but ratings are all about probability (i think). So, although he won this one, if they played best of 100 games I'd put all my money on the 1882 chap. However, if it was a one off game I'd only put a wee bit of money on the 1882 chap because there is more chance of him losing :)

All said and done though, the bottom line is that this young 'un did really well and gets my full congratulations!

He won 5 out of 7. So, not entirely sure about that "probability" thing. Plus, look at this play, each move, it's mature and seems to indicate his ability is at least near an 1800 rating.

 I stand corrected.

What's interesting about this is that it ties in with something I talked to someone else about here a wee while ago. It was about youth and the speed of thought. I was saying that the older player would have been exsposed to chess patterns, and therefore, would recognise things quicker than a pup. However, he felt that younger players, would have a limited pattern database in their head - but their superior mental agility would see them win.

He's dominating this 1882 chap in blitz - it would be interesting to see how he performs in classical. Again, I do respect the wee man - he's done something I could not.

...I'm still thinking though that ratings indicate some degree of probability - just like the bookies (betting shops).

It's a blitz game. Young players often perform better in blitz games than older players. And the standard of play displayed by black here wasn't 1800 (I doubt he would have left his bishop en prise in a long game).

The white player displayed opportunism and some good board vision (queen moves), so I wouldn't be surprised if he plays above 1400 in a short while, although this game doesn't yet clearly show a much superior ability (I mean not yet in the 1700-1800 range).

Show us one of his long games, so that we can give a better assessment.
