At least, that seems the point of the poem.  That, and oppression of the underclass for the amusement of the rich and powerful.

I think you should read more carefully.

Did chess at one point used to be played on checkers' boards?  The poem mentions a lot of red and black, and that's usually a checkers board.

I love the poem, very quaint.
