I used to be stuck around the 1500-1600 level for around a year or so and suddenly in January itself my rating went from 1640 to 1840 which seems unreal to me!

Maybe you've improved? I've found that when my rating floor permanently improves it tends to be in big chunks.

Commercially speaking it would make sense, in this site (and society) every mean is employed in order to give some false sense of achievement.
