Just let him beat you with a smile and say you look forward to learning from him. Or kidnap her :-)

If he played on his college team and you have till December, you are not going to come close to beating him if that is what you are looking for.  Just learn the basics and terminology so you can follow along if you talk chess.  Watch some live tournament commentary, learn algebraic noatation, learn basic tactical and strategic ideas, play some standard chess, and watch some videos here or on youtube.

Listen, what he will be impressed with is,you assuring him that you are gonna take good care of his daughter and won't end up hurting her. That's all any father would care about. So, just be yourself and don't try to be a chess player which you aren't.It's very easy to spot a n00b on the board. Just try not to make any blunders or hang your pieces in an obvious fashion. All the best!

Develop all your pieces first before you move the same one a second time.

Own the center.

Centralize your rooks.

Make use of pins.

Beware of tricky knight forks.

Keep your king safe but leave a flight square for him.

Get 5 of your pieces attacking the king at once so you can sacrifice one if needed for the checkmate.

Pawns to the center, develop knights first, then bishops, then queen somewhere off the backrank but not where it can be attacked (maybe 2nd rank)

Then castle and centralize your rooks.

Make use of x-rays on the king with your heavy pieces.

Restrict his king's available squares.

Look for ways to take away squares from his bishops so they are stuck behind one of their own pawns.

*Coordinate all your faster developed pieces to work together against the king at the same time.

Keep your pawns together (connected) if you can for the endgame and try to create a "passed pawn" you can promote to a queen.

Put rooks on open files at your first opportunity and semi-open files if no completely open files are available yet.

Remember when you capture with a pawn, it opens the file for you there.

Introduce me to her good looking sister.

Anticipate where he may be trying to put his pieces and take away those squares from him first either with a pawn advance or a redeployment of your pieces.

Look for ways for your queen, bishops, knights and rooks to work together as a team against his king as soon as possible and keep them coordinating for the attack.

Practice your tactics trainer on here.

Learn how to checkmate with just a rook and king, with just a queen and knight, with just a queen and bishops, with a rook and knight, rook and bishop, etc.

Keep us updated!

Estragon is spot on.  Be impressed with his chess playing. Ask good questions. Give him praise.

And finally let him know or think you will seek and take his advice!

Do not bother learning chess better--let him be the superior player.

[he will be anyway]
