Help with software

I recently purchased Houdini Pro for my computer. I plan on using this software for my own analysis. After this is done I will run it through the engine to see if I missed anything drastic in my analysis. The major issue is this has to be the most non-user friendly software I have come across….and yes this includes Windows Vista Laughing Anyway the user manual provides one with scarce information. How am I to take advantage of this product and all of its features without a decent user’s manual? Look at the internet? The info there is scarce and patchy at best. So I come to all of you the experienced Fritz 13 interface experts. All I want to do is have the ability to enter my games (without the engine making moves), annotate them, make them into a pgn and send them off via e-mail. I don’t think that is all that hard to accomplish but for a newb to this software it seems very difficult. So could any of you give me a hand with this I really need the help! I’M kind of dense so could you spell it out to me in a step by step process.Tongue Out Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks Folks!

To enter moves manually, click the engine in the top tool bar and select switch off engine. To get pgn, select edit > copy > copy game. The pgn is ready for pasting.

Hopefully my droning dissertation here may be helpful in conjunction with more specific answers you'll get here...

I'm really trying to be objective (and tactful) here: I own F12 BTW and have Houdini 1.5 (freeware) loaded in it, so I can empathize with your plight, BUT you really need to RTFM the Fritz manual, not all at once of course. I get a feel for new software (chess and non-chess) by going thru all the pulldown menus and checking out various features and options, in addition to reading bits and pieces of the HELP file and not just the stuff I'm trying to look up. Trust me, you can figure out a lot of this on your own by just turning F13 on and screwing around with it until you start getting the hang of it - and it's a very complex program, there's a lot to learn I've only scratched the surface myself. Being familar with F13 will help you use Houdini although I realize Houdini is still a separate issue here.

ChessBase has many tutorials for their products inc. F13. YouTube probably has a fair # of videos about Fritz and probably a few at least on Houdini. Some peeps resent being told this but in addition to asking others for help learning how to use search engines is a really good way to help yourself (most of the time).  There are many chess sites out there and some specialize in exactly what you're looking for: specific tech knowledge about chess software, and you can find several on your own if you try. And all you wanted to do was play chess right? Me too but it's usually not that easy once you start using PCs, chess software - and Windows VistaFrown (Try upgrading to Windows 7 if you can, if you don't like Vista you'll probably hate Windows 8 unless you love using a touch screen for everything all the time)

Being the dense person that I am I can't seem to find the edit button to get at the pgn. Where is this function. Also, I figured out how to add my annotations and I trust there will be no issues here anymore. When I get my pgn I will just paste it to an email and send it off? Sorry all of this is new to me and as I said IM kind of dense Cool A big thank you to for the help guys.....

You'll be one step ahead of me I never figured out how to email games directly from F12.

In F12 if you have the "pull down" menus (actually some sort of dam "ribbon" according to Fritz, they just HAD to have a "new and improved" interface) it has Home - Insert - Bd - Training - Analysis - Engine - View tabs (L to R, top of screen). If you have the HOME tab open, "edit game data" is over on the far left. But wait let me guess - did they "improve" the GUI in F13 so nothing here applies to you? Frown

I started out with F10 and really hated the F12 interface for a long time until I finally got used to it. You're probably no more dense than most of us, the most important thing is persistence and looking for stuff VERY carefully...and keeping in mind if you're looking for something common like "autosave" it's there - but under a totally different name no one in their right mind would ever think of.

I hear you Nimzo....user friendly it is not...

I don't see why as something so simple has been made so complex. I don't think my needs are fairly straight forward...it is tremendously frustrating.

And here I thought I was the village idiot (OK, maybe the jury's still out on that one..)for despising the totally nonintuitive Fritz interface.  Can't help you OP but you have my most heartfelt commiseration.

If all you want to do is manually enter a game into a PGN viewer/editor, annotate the moves & then copy+paste the resulting PGN file into an e-mail, why not use Game Editor on this site - it does all of that & won't cost you anything.

If you're interested, this will explain how to use it...

In Fritz 13, simply use the "Home" tab, then "Copy game" copies the game to the Clipboard.  Open your e-mail program and Ctrl-V to paste it into the e-mail.

If you want to annotate a game, the "Insert" tab has all the functions you need (such as "Text after move", symbols, or insert a board view) and the tiny icons at the very top duplicate some of those functions.
