Hikaru Nakamura can become a world chess champion

I feel that Hikaru has the talent to become a world chess champion if he plays less blitz and bullet and concentrate more on classical time games. What are your opinions on this.

I doubt it, he is older than Carlsen so Naka's chess skill that puts him in the world elite will pass sooner than Carlsen's skill so he doesn't have much time left. But i don't think Carlsen would lose to him anyway, Carlsen is the best in the world for a reason.

I agree that age is not on his side but he still has time to become a champion, its not like he is approaching his forties.Maybe we will find out in time.

Maybe you should show some respect to a player who has accomplished so much in chess.

Another issue for Naka is that in classical time controls Carlsen has beaten him 13 times while Naka has only beaten him once.

Try becoming a grandmaster let alone a super GM then talk about accomplishments.

Yes,maybe it is a psychological thing that works against him while playing Carlsen.

Or maybe it's the fact that Carlsen has been world number 1 for the last 7 years.

Yes it is obvious that Carlsen is better than Hikaru but not as much as their record against each other shows.

I think a player born in 80s will not become a world chess champion. Since Lasker every decade has its champion till 70s. Then 80s lacked it, 90s already have it. I think 80s will not have their championç

UPDATE: I realized I neglected Ponomariov. So, 80s do have a world champion

Last I checked, Carlsen has a huge plus score against Nakamura in classical time controls, and Nakamura has hardly ever won. It does not seem like Nakamura has a chance against Carlsen.

Guess who is in form and won the US Championship. The GOAT.

Yes I am afraid that us the reality, it's not just his age, it's how long he has been playing the way he does, especially in classical games, he just cannot help himself from throwing in the odd iffy opening, at elite level you cannot do this, don't get me wrong it's interesting to see but not the way to compete with the best, I have seen him throw in some right stuff like Ponziani as white??! four knights with g3?! to name a couple, he does like to experiment far too much which is his downfall at classical!?

If he plays in the Candidates, or in the WCC, do you think this is going to happen?

This isn't really that relevant to why Hikaru won't be world champion.

As I recall nearly 10 years ago Hikaru was making a push for it, and we all know how that worked out. IIRC he's only ever played in 1 candidate's match.

---

I recall a story Maurice Ashley tells about Judit Polgar. When Polgar was a top 10 player she said there were multiple levels of skill between her and number 1.

Hikaru is one of the best players in the world, but at the same time very far away from number 1. He's just not good enough.

Also Naka recently fell out of the top 10.

Carlsen hasn't been rated under 2800 since age 18.

Naka broke 2800 briefly, for a few months, when he was 27.

Frankly they're incomparable. Different classes of player.

Lets see! Wait for Naka to prove you wrong.

I don't think he can be winning in his own sport let alone chess at 69.

I'll be happy if Naka can just play consistently well at the Olympiad.  His 50% score cost the USA team the gold medal in 2018.

Only seven men have been rated #1 since the early 1970s.  Naka is not one of them and probably never will be.  It is amazing how close Caruana came late last year.  Just one classical win over Carlsen would have made him both World Champion and #1; and one classical win over Naka at the London Chess Classic in December would have made him #1.  But that moment passed, and now Carlsen is ahead of #2 in rating by a solid 33.7 Elo points.  Perhaps Artemiev is the rising star who can dethrone Carlsen.  It won't be easy to do.
