How can I find out my rating on chess.com? It's low, I know.

I would like eventually to play live chess with someone on chess.com. But I need to know my rating, I think. How do I do that?

I am not at all advanced. Not even an intermediate, though I am trying to learn all I can. Are there others here in my category who someday would be willing to play me? And I have to tell you, I am a very slow player.

But first, tell me how I find what my rating is, please.

If you haven't played any games at chess.com yet, your rating is 1200.  It is the default starting place.  I don't think you can see your live chess (blitz, quick, or long) rating until after you have played a game.

We can play, if you like....I'm pretty new, as well.

stwils

Yes. I would. But am not good and slow as a snail.

Dont even bother looking at your rating until after at least 10 completed games.

Is there a way I can play some of these games against a computer on chess.com?

How do I do this?

taconian, could I play white? I've never played on chess.com, and I can assure you my rating is not what is indicated.

Yes you can.  On the top left of any page, right under the Chess.com logo, you should see "Play".  Put your mouse on that and in the drop down box click on "Against the Computer".

How do I indicate that I want the game to be rated?

You can't play rated games against the computer. It is just a java applet.

JRadis

When you input a challenge open or to a specific person there is a button or something where it says, unrated, change it to rated and there you have it.

JRadis

If you want you can challenge me... I have 1650 in rating....

stwils

Thank you, but I am not anywhere near 1650. I am guessing my rating is nearer 700.

Do you think I could find out by playing against Chessmaster 9000? I have that.

I want to know what it is now so that when (and if) I improve, I can see my rating go up. :)

Negative, chess computers and chess engines do not select the lines they play the same way humans do. Where as a computer will always calculate the same number of moves ahead on the same skill level, the number of moves a human player will calculate will vary depending on the position on the board. I would treat a rating against a computer as seperate from one attained against a human, in much the same way asthe live chess has different ratings for different time controls.
