How come some stalemates give you points but others take it away?

How come some stalemates give you points but others take it away? It seems as if no points should be added or deducted.

It depends on the rating/ skill of your opponent- if you were expected/should have beat them, but drew, -1. If they were expected to win, but you drew, then +1 to you. Extreme cases go to +/-2. If the two of you are very similar skill, then you will gain 0, loose 0, as a draw was expected.
