How Do Chess Pieces Physically "Move" In The Rules?

Hello, I was having a discussion with my friend about how chess pieces move and we were in disagreement. He believes chess pieces move metaphorically and blink to their destination. I believe the interpretation of the rules simulates a literal movement of the piece to its destination with the knight jumping over pieces.

Even though it doesn't affect competitive result is there a specific way the pieces are acknowledged to move in the rules or historically in the game's canon?
