How do I actually checkmate?

This question isn't remotely smart I know, but I'll be honest. I just started and just can't figure out how to win this game. As soon as I do that, i'll be able to do well for myself. If you can explain it well, thank you.

In chess, each player can capture any piece except the kings. The both kings stay on the board at all times. Now when you attack a piece, you are in the verge of capturing it. Your opponent must respond by blocking it, retreating, attacking, or just allowing his piece to be captured. When king is under attack, it’s called check. The king cannot be captured so it must respond by moving away or blocking. If there is no legal move, as in if the king can no longer block or move when it is under check, the game is over, and that is called checkmate.

The objective of the game is to land a checkmate to the opponent's king (in lieu of actually capturing the kings, unlike war times when enemy leaders might be captured).

But for this to even happen, you must have already known how chess pieces move! Including the weird looking...en passant (some very unusual pawn move).

I give you a quick idea of what snoozyman mentioned when the king can no longer block or move.

In the same example, with Black to move instead, there is an available checkmate, but it's harder to understand.

Some common patterns towards the end of the game (the "endgame" stage). There are more efficient methods for the second and third ones, but these are the basic methods.

1. Queen and rook checkmate

2. Queen and king checkmate

3. Rook and king checkmate

Basically, the object of the game is to trap the king by attacking it with check, and if the king cannot escape the check, it is checkmate.
