HOW TO CLAIM A DRAW ON A ONLINE MATCH GAME BY REPEAT POSITION?

Hi there.

i KNOW THIS MUST HAVE HAPPENED TO SOME OF YOU.

I'm playing a match game and I thINK I will get a repeat position three times not necessarily in a row, how do I claim the draw when it happens.

I know I can offer the draw but how does the chess.com know I claim it by repeat position? I don't see a button to press.

I see a button to offer a draw. But that doesn't say its because of a repeat position. My opponent might not accept it.

How is the claimed DECLARED?

It never has happened to me before here on line.

Here are the draw rules I found on chess.com

Draws

Occasionally chess games do not end with a winner, but with a draw. There are 5 reasons why a chess game may end in a draw:

  • The position reaches a stalemate where it is one player’s turn to move, but his king is NOT in check and yet he does not have another legal move
  • The players may simply agree to a draw and stop playing
  • There are not enough pieces on the board to force a checkmate (example: a king and a bishop vs.a king)
  • A player declares a draw if the same exact position is repeated three times (though not necessarily three times in a row)
  • Fifty consecutive moves have been  played where neither player has moved a pawn or captured a piece.

                                             THANKS.

I hope I get an answer soon so I can claim it because it will happen. I have tried various variations and It will be repeat unless there is a blunder.

Please don't make a comment on the actual game because that is not allowed and I don't want any.

In "live chess" the same button is used to offer a draw and to claim a draw.  If a draw is claimable it claims it, and if not it offers it.  I would imagine the same is true in "online chess."  However, I have'nt used the draw button in online chess yet so I'm not sure.

If a repetition has indeed occured the very same "offer draw" button now changes to " claim draw" or simply "draw" (I don't remember which) and by hitting it a draw will be claimed and the game will be over.

When the position is repeated 3 times, the "Offer Draw" button becomes "Claim Draw". That's it. You click on it and the games is declared draw by repetition.

Hi there Exeles. Thanks for the information.  I went to you games in profile and saw the game of 18 moves it clearly show the three positions.

Here is the link for others that want to see the three positions.

Thanks to all of you that made a comment. I will post as soon as I use the draw feature.

I think you can't claim it if the repetition hasn't yet occurred.

Nobody is trying to claim it before it happens. This was for information purposes only.

I was going to lock this post and I happen to find how to claim a DRAW instructions.

It wasn't easy to find, though. But you guys gave me the answer.

How do I claim a draw?

In Live Chess, the 'Draw' button is generally used to offer your opponent a draw, which may be accepted or declined. However, in the instance of Three-fold Repetition, you can use the 'Draw' button to claim a draw, without your opponent having an option to decline.

Once the position has repeated three times, make your move then click on the 'Draw' button. This ends the game as a draw.

In online or turn-based chess, once the position is repeated three times, make your move.  Now, on the screen for that game, just below the notations box there will be text for you to click on that says 'claim game'. Click on that to claim the draw.  This method also works for the 50-move rule, which states that the game may be drawn if 50 moves (2 ply) are played with no captures and no pawn moves.

Finally, note that in cases where the opponent has insufficient material to mate (lone King, King + Knight, King + Bishop, King + 2 Knights) a draw will be automatically declared where there is a time-out.

im pretty sure draw by repetion is also broken on chess.com (surprise surprise, when draw by insufficient is also broken as hell)

let's say it's your 3rd move to repeat, but your opponent premoves a move (that doesn't repeat for the 3rd time) it is humanly impossible for you to be able to claim the draw right after you make your move.

which is why good websites allow you to claim the draw BEFORE you move.

It wasn't.

Your opponent must have claimed the draw.

Avatar of RichColorado

I did get a message that my opponent claimed it.

Mystery is solved. Live and learn.
