How do I get a rating ? Does one play several games to achieve a level, or is th

I am new to this site, I am 58 and finally broke down and got a computer after using the ones at the library. I love chess and would like to play online. How does one establish a rating so I can play  some folks on my level ? I have played superior players an have learned much, but getting blown off the board does get old after  awhile. Thanx Norm RH

Tank you Estragon, I do appreciate it. if I understand correctly as one plays the score is kept current [sef -correcting] and Im " spotted "1200 points ?

I just signed up for the diamond membership and am listed as being unrated yet I have played many games. ( not necessarily good ones ) Does this apply to "Live Chess" as well as "Online Chess" ?

If not are there any specific steps that I need to take to get a rating ?
