"2 e z" for someone who's < 1100 rating?

train tactics, either get a paying membership here or do the daily 3 problems, or find problems on the internet. Train as much skewers, double attacks, forks, as you can.

Can anyone suggest a site that has these types of problems to solve. The overwhelming majority focus on finding mate, and I'd really like to concentrate on the skewers, forks, discovered attacks, etc.

I've had a rating hovering around 1050-1100 for a while now, but I can't seem to get above that. I lose almost all games with 1200 level players plus. What do I need to do to break the 1200 barrier?

Crack the books study chess slowly and systematically in reverse study the endgame and the elements of chess then study the middle game and the openings in direct relation to the endgame like Tarrasch as Lasker taught.

If you study the right way and order chess won't be confusing and you'll see the game as a complete harmonious whole don't make the mistake of studying a little bit of this and a little bit of that and mix it all up with contrary advice from people online videos and websites.

People who take that approach just tie themselves in knots they never get better or improve their chess.

I've never heard that advice explicitly before, but I expect you may be right.

There's some good advice in this thread, though some of it is overkill for the level you are talking about.

I'd like to add that some of the most helpful advice I ever received was from Dan Heisman's "Novice Nook" column at another site, particularly the concept of "real chess." I know it's archive on the net, and he contributes here at Chess.com too. I've seen advice similar to the "real chess" concept mentioned by others, but Heisman is IMO one of the great instructional writers.

The guy who mentioned playing solitaire chess is on to something too -- it highly recommended by two other writers I think are among the best: Rolf Wetzel and Cecil Purdy. This too IMO is not necessary for reaching 1100-1200 but is effective and fun.

Why pay money for chessimo when you can get a great free tactics trainer as http://chess.emrald.net? This one is better than the one on this site chess.com and is free and unlimited. If you want to do solitaire chess which is highly recommended you can get a free chess gui called Lucas Chess which is free and has a program built in called Play Like a Grandmaster. You can download grandmaster games to use also free. Right now I'm playiing withthe games of Tal who was famous for his speculative sacrifices and king side attacks. If you download Lucas Chess I suggest you start with the games of Paul Morphy. Solitaire chess can be played without any software at all, all you need is a book with games in it and some index cards. Cover up the moves with the cards, and expose the moves one by one. Before uncovering each move, try to guess it in advance. If the book has notes, read the notes after uncovering each move and compare the authors ideas with your own.

One of the most informative posts I have seen! I was wondering how to play solitare chess, as I have seen a lot of people refer to it on internet. Thank you very much for explaining that to me. I have seen some solitare chess "sets" for sale on internet. They aren't expensive, could those work too?

Avatar of DrFrank124c

I think those solitaire chess sets are a waste of money. Invest in a book of games of your favorite player and follow my instructions given in my last post. Or download Lucas Chess or download Winboard and use the Training Mode. If you have extra money to throw away, throw it my way!

LOL, hard to be any more explicit than that Frank. Thanks again for the advice, I will try the free way first. Always get your moneys worth when you go that route, lol. H.G.

If you want, I'll play you in a game and afterwards we can run through it together. What time controls do you normally play?

I always play 30 mins, I need lots of time. I might take you up on that offer. Also, would you mind critiquing this game? I think it represents some of my best play. I'm having  a hard time figuring out what I should have done different (had my opponent not blundered at the end, he/she probably would have won)

If you are still up for a game, friend me and we can play sometime.

18g4? Don't advance pawns at this stage unless you have a plan. You are advancing on both flanks, which looks like you don't have a plan. The open c file is very weak for white, and you left him/her an easy target. Nice mate though.

play the guy who is trying to get to 1000.

Got to 1100! Tactics helped a HUGE amount, and in general playing carefully and avoiding blunders. Once again, thanks for all the advice. I might try solitaire chess and some chess programs/sites like chessimo, but I don't want to start on the books just yet.

hi i am also the same ranking as you , It seems practicing tactics and problems would be helpful

Avatar of iixxPROxxii

To get past 1100,Make your target 1150.

Do tactics, tactics, tactics. There are also some other websites which have a free tactics trainer.

Play with people 50 Points better than you. Play 5|0 or 5|2 so you have more time to think.
