You need to be able to see and anticipate tactics, both yours, and your opponent's.
Aside from that, I'd suggest learning about positional features, like good and bad minor pieces, weak squares, pawn weaknesses, pawn structure in general, important files/diagonals...Learn to recognize these things and learn what to do with them. This will help you form plans that suit the position.
