It's important to keep in mind that neither 5/0 or 10/0 are "long time controls." I strongly recommend playing games of at least 15/10. 30/30 or more if you can, but at least 15/10.
Having a delay is going to force you to think about moves and decide the game "on the board," instead of trying to "flag your opponent" like you said. That's a bad habit to get into. As for distractions - just close out of them all beforehand! A 15/10 game is only a half-hour commitment generally.

I play 90/30 OTB. Last game I played lasted for 4 hours. Sometimes I even forget to go and make a pee. Really, I don't know how to help you.
