I think friendship arises naturally - no need to force it :-) I've found chess players to be a decent lot over the years - although outwardly most chess congresses look like a meeting of "retards anonymous" :-) - many different interesting people and we have quite a laugh at our club - away matches, driving together are a real hoot :-)

chess is also a competititve sport and i have noticed that the best way to make friends is to show your acumen.
