Yes , Gleese sure is and exponent. I like his humor , but I prefer Billy Connelly a Scotish standup comedian. He is loud and wild and uses rough language , not yer typical uppernose British stuff.

after watching straw dogs i gave up on trying to understand scottish accent.

I'm saving my math for the lottery. chess will have to wait.

@TetsuoShima ,

Yes , scottish is a rough language and hard to understand for non Anglo speaking people. I understand English (and even not Gaelic Irish) pretty desent , but sometimes I have problem with the scottish tone. Luckely Billy speaks with a loud voice anyway.Sounds like he barks at you .

Mathematics (and Physics) are both discoveries. The aliens on planet Nimzo would come up with the same kind of math. Math is about a universal truth that already exists in this world. Physics is a summary of deductions made by looking at the world around us. The Nimzonians might have a different kind of Physics though.

Chess is an invention (hurray for the man that did it) , it didn't exist before. What was on HIS mind when he created it , how was it to be played ?

If a chessboard behaves like a small universe , then there must exist some form of math to describe it. No form of physics I believe.

I didn't say anywhere that math is correct.

TetsuoShima

ok i mean how can you say the aliens will have the same kind of math??

@TetsuoShima ,

The Nimzonians would have found the theorem of Pythagoras too.

What I do on this thread is try to answer OP's question . Because I think it's difficult to find a short answer directly , I try to use descriptive examples and figurative language to express what I mean.

It is hard to be constructive , but easy to criticize any suggestion posted here. Now I see you've gotten as far as the second line in my quote and I am afraid that when I keep answering you,this will never end.

TetsuoShima

Ok

"The ancient definition of chess is that it is a fusion of sport, science and art."-Garry Kasparov.

I agree, Chess is a fusion of science and art but definitely not maths. Being good in maths never makes anyone good at chess.

Chess relates to math because calcuting is used and that's what you must do for math, at least in my level.....

At least at my level, it doesn't.

A computer might say:

"At least at my level, it's all math (not that there's anything that isn't)."

jaaas, that is true.

Chess has algebraic notation.  Chess has x and y coordinates (ranks and files). Chess is geometric with angles, diagonals, squares.

BOTH ARE AWESOME!! :)

This is a very interesting question. Somehow, chess seems related to math. There are at least 2 groups which you are only allowed to join if you are a member of AoPS (Art of problem solving), which is a major math website. This isn't the right place to ask how music relates to math, but it is the right place to ask how chess relates to math.

that's interesting..! Smile
