Most of the members of chess clubs that i've belonged to were either from Maths, Science, Computing or Business backgrounds. I was a bit of an oddball as I went to Art college instead but have always taken a layman's interest in Science (not so much the others).
How does math relate to chess?

when you have to calculate aseries of moves which you think are the ones most likely to be made, you basically use an imaginary probability tree inside your head. that is math.

Math doesn't relate to Chess. They're both their own separate worlds.
Apples and oranges.
Math is seldom about calculations (if at all!! - we have computers for that), but about exact proofs instead. But the latter occurs in chess only in composed problems or endgames. On the other hand in chess board and tactical vision are of enormous importance, as long with calculations.
Math and Chess both are good way to exercise the brain as both demand good concentration, patience, and intellect.
