This is a very fair point. Ulf Anderssen (one of the world's very top OTB GMs) has also produced similar result in correspondence chess. I have read that Karpov also plays CC.

The world champ in postal is from Norway, he is an IM in regular chess, around top 10 in Norway. He would have no chance without fritz/rybka.
-But it's the same in regular chess, the top 10 in OTB, needs fritz/rybka to stay on top.

There are many stories of famous chess players who excelled in both discilplines. I will say; you do not play chess you understand it!!

Who is the current champ in CC play ?
Ivar Bern was the 17th world champ, he has 2329 in fide and is on 28th place in Norway! (just checked the numbers)
I don't know who's the current world champ, Ivar Bern (CC GM) used 4 years on his final, today it goes faster because they send the moves by e-mail.
Norway allso won the olypic final in CC, one player on that team, Morten Lilleøren (CC GM):

They are both active players, so I don't think the fide rating is much wrong.

Reb, the current ICCF World Correspondence Champion (with citation needed) would be Joop Van Oosterom. All you need is a big fat wallet and much spare time ;-)
How much money does a CC world champ win/make ? Do they get fat prizes like Anand/Kramnik and other big otb matches get ? What are they playing for besides ICCF titles/recognition ?
I don't think you win money at all, just the title.
Joop is a billionaire, come on folks get your facts and figures! I know Georgia is offering millions to ex pat Portugese chess playing fisherman to home to roost ;-)

Joop van Oosterom (born 12 December 1937, Hilversum) is a Dutch billionaire and chess enthusiast. For many years he has staged the annual Melody Amber tournaments in Monaco, where world-class Grandmasters play rapid and blindfold games.
Van Oosterom was a strong correspondence chess player, but suffered a severe stroke some years ago. Nevertheless, he concluded the world correspondence chess championship successfully and became the 18th World Champion in Correspondence Chess. This achievement, however, has been criticized, as at the time of the championship Van Oosterom had hired grandmaster Jeroen Piket as his personal secretary.

Define "patzer" ? They are indeed patzers compared to the elite otb players. The fact that an IM under 2400 fide can become WC in correspondence is proof enough. That coule NEVER happen in otb play.
The core of this argument assumes CC players have a special deep insight into positional chess due to their long thinks on each move. But this is silly -- time spent doesn't make up for understanding, this is why GMs can give simuls against masters and masters can give me 10:1 time odds and win (I assume they can anyway :p)
If you don't realize the top 10 already have a basement full of Rybkas and Fritzes running 24/7 on quad and oct core computers then you don't know how it works these days.
