For crying out loud some of you just don't get it! If you found chess in the normal way and play at your local club, well sure you are better off reading books and analyzing games and studying opening lines etc... But if you're someone who found chess by watching the Queen's Gambit and you just want to know how to play casually, someone like Levy would be great for the average person who doesn't have time for hardcore studying.

I already said he's very good at entertaining low rated children.

That doesn't mean I think it was easy. He has to work to make new content all the time, and e.g. put up with Hikaru's awful personality.

They don't have the moving pieces and boards though sad.png

Good at what?

At playing he is almost good- so far his highest rating is about the same as mine many years ago.

As a chess streamer and YT influencer, he is total junk, which explains why he has so many followers.

Haha Jealous person

You're an idiot. He's a great teacher and entertainer. And he's making more money than you in chess. So go cry about it, my little IM.

Oh boohoo. Not everyone likes what you like. Get over it.

This is a very chessic "black-white" approach.

Naka may be obnoxious at times, but he has some very good qualities as well- e.g. he was the only top player that snobbed the Saudi pertodollars and declined playing in totalitarian, antifeminist and highly oppressive Saudi Arabia 3,5 years ago.

All other top players (excluding Israelis, which were not welcome there) were blinded by the glitter of the prizes and did not see quite a few appalling things.

Sure, some of them objected FIDE's choice, but that happened AFTER they received their prizes.

I see two camps here / those who respect a traditional view for the spirit of chess and opponents and those who view chess as nothing more than a forum for entertainment. Today’s “entertainment”  as pointed out, is not about quality or chess education but rather trash talking, dropping f-bombs every other word and accusing anyone who beats Levy of cheating. The kids idolize Levy and Naka. So it is. The spirit of chess subsequently has taken a nose dive.
Chess streaming could be so much better- but is stuck in a shoot-em up video game mode.

I’ve never been accused of cheating tongue.png

I didn't know that.

I don’t hate naka for his online shenanigans more I hate him for how far ahead he is from everyone else on chess.com

Besides, the people I've seen Levy accuse were very obviously cheating.

As usual, the low rated children who follow this stuff can't tell the difference. I remember people posting comments on chessbase about how maybe Borislav Ivanov was just really good and GMs were jealous.

He seems like a decent enough bloke to me, can't understand the hate for a fella that's only trying to make a living from (his undoubted) talent. YES, an IM is most definitely talented.  Not everyone can be a Morphy or a Pele, an Ali, a Federer (or a Kosteniuk wink.png ) etc etc, but they can still be helluva talented at what they do.

I enjoy his content, it's usually entertaining and often informative. I particularly like his 10 minute openings, not too in depth that it confuses and just enough that it gives beginners like me a few opening moves they can feel reasonably confident with.

A decent bloke, a decent player and a decent streamer....but I'm still Team Kosteniuk though. wink.png

Which is to say... sifting through it is dangerous.

Luckily, some GMs have put together good material, and a lot of it! It's well organized too.

They call it "books."

Yeah, I have a couple dozen of these things you call "books" related specifically to chess wink.png...one of them talks about how the bad the Berlin is for black.  Which is the problem with books...chess is a little too dynamic to rely primarily on books for reference.
