Yeah It is popular but many people don’t know how to play
I bet that at least 10-25 % "knows" how to play since we do have some kind of chess for kids school competitions in the fourth grade. Most probably thinks that it is a game for smart people but mostly that it is something kids or elders play. Well, better than bridge at least.

Here in Britain, chess is not that popular. I don't have a single friend nearby or family member who even knows how to play.
I knew the rules as a kid and played abit at school, I was often derided for that. I did not play again till I was about 30 because I was worried about "fitting in" with other people.
That gives you an idea of how chess is viewed here.
