How long did it take you to reach a 2000 rating? (any time control)

My first online rating here was approx 1700-1800. It took me 1-2 years to hit 2000 and then I plateau now. ( My OTB games in my teanage were not rated)

Do you play under FIDE? 2000 OTB in two years is pretty good to be honest.
No, the tournments were not Fide rated. I have no idea about my rating.

From plating my first rated blitz game to getting a rating above 2000 it took me nearly exactly 4 years.
As best I recall from long long ago, a cousin taught me the rules when I was 13 or 14. The local library [rural south in the US] had 2 chess books-Point Count Chess and Alekhine's best games [the latter was useless to me as it was so far above my level]. Somewhere along the way I got Laskers manual of chess and a thin Reinfeld book on openings. [Back then they were less than 1$ in drug stores next to the comic books]. A few years later when I was 15 Ruben Schocron, [IM & former Argentine Champion-- If Elanor or other of his family reads this-I remember him well and with great appreciation] who worked there for a textile company as an Industrial Engineer started playing 1x per week a simul at a local venue and I started going every week. I also started playing in tournaments when my parents could take me [it cost money we didnt really have and meant travelling so it was infrequent]. Jared Radin organized some HS tournaments that were free & I recall 2 of them [Thank you Jared!!]. At 16 I want to a [free] summer program and there was one strong player there- George Andrews [George-If you read this HI-let me know how you are doing!!]. We played again&again&again. I must have improved a lot from both. That fall I was rated 1400ish but I was beat 1700s-looking back though my games were often stupid. Then I got a copy of Fischers book and accelerated. By 18-19 I was above 2000 and holding my own against low masters. I still didnt understand squat but could calculate intensely and, having studied mainly ancient, Lasker-era games, maybe my ideas were hard to predict? So USCF 1400-2000+ was 3 years and absolute 0-2000+ was 6 years. I was also young and my brain was plastic.

One game ...online My first rapid game was against a 1900+. I tried the Marshall Attack against the Lopez for the first time, and won. tbh, I got pretty lucky. I mean, I was up a piece or something, but I accidently trapped my own rook AND HE DIDN'T SEE IT
OTB? Still have to xD
Honestly about 10 years. I could have gotten there faster, but for me chess has always been for enjoyment, relaxation, and de-stressing, so I’ve never studied at all. I don’t know the names of almost any openings, I haven’t studied tactics or worked on puzzles in anything but a casual way. I’ve gotten to 2000 only by playing and on my terms. I know I could be much stronger than I am if I worked on it at all, but that’s not why I play chess.

I started playing online 5 years ago, and just broke 2000 here last year. But in standard and blitz OTB, it didn't take as long. I broke 2000 3 years ago in both.

You need to take into account the experience you got from when you started to play offline the first time....because you didn't go from 0 to 2000 in one game....that is a very superficial answer!

2000 ELO in 2 years is a lie!

Bobby Fisher with an IQ of 180 and a passion for chess(he read his first chess book at 6 years old at 8 he was in a chess club with a coach) he was 1726 USCF at 12 years old.
At the end of April of 1956, Fischer's USCF rating was 2168.
He was then 13 years old.

Magnus Carlsen learned chess in 1996 at the age of 5, taught by his father.
Carlsen was coached by 7-time Norwegian champion Simen Agdestein (1967- ) at the Norwegian College of Elite Sport. He was also coached by Curt Hansen.
In September 2000, Carlsen played in the Norwegian junior teams championship. He scored 3.5 out of 5 against the top junior players of Norway. His performance rating was 2000.
So 4 years for Carlsen!

In February 2002, Carlsen took 1st in the Under-12 division of the Nordic Youth Championship. He scored 5 out of 6. His rating was 2148.
So 5+ years to get to 2148!

of course, but the question was "how long", so, in terms of measurable games, only one.

How long in term of years did you go from your first ever game and 2000.
Or how long in terms of games since your first ever game!
Do you really think anyone is interested in how many games on ONE chess site?

yes
Chess.com is my first chess site
I've prob played maybe a thousand games (otb + online) until 2000
Just curious.
