under 25 moves is very rough, because there might be a 26 mover that is very beautiful.probably the definition should be: anything close to 25 moves which is beautiful.
How long is a miniature?

Robert,
I agree - 25 moves is a rough standard to keep. That's a good reason to why miniatures are beautiful and treasured when they are achieved legitimately. ;)

I've always heard of miniatures referred to as under 20, because the average game of chess goes for like 26 moves right? 25 seems too long to me.

This topic is getting old. Just set up three threads
A: up to 25 (for example) moves
B: 26-40 (for example) moves
C: 41+ (for example)
No exceptions. Done.

wait what?? These days the average opening phase alone goes for 26 moves or more depending its popularity.
Well, I think one of the major problems in setting a 'miniature point' is that, the stronger players get the longer their games go for on average.
Losing in less than 25 moves would be embaressing for most GMs I'd think, yet this is the length of time most games between mortals tend to go for.
